Top LGBTQ Titles to Binge on Netflix

binge-responsiblyBinge-watching shows on Netflix has become an actual activity at my house, rather than something that just kind of happens in background while we clean or pay bills. Now it’s something I consciously plan and look forward to. Nothing to do on Sunday afternoon? Better pencil in four non-stop hours of a House of Cards. Rain keeping us inside? Time to watch all 13 episodes of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Don’t lie. You know you’re just as guilty for indulging in day-long sessions of hardcore series watching, too!

However, while there are plenty of hyped shows available for streaming right now that can satisfy your craving for a good binge, it can be a little harder to find a quality LGBTQ series among the sea of options. Not to worry though, I’ve done the necessary research for you. Take a look at just a few of the LGBTQ titles on Netflix that should be at the top of your must-binge list.

This WWII-era drama follows a group of women who work in a munitions plant while the men are fighting overseas. It’s a Canadian-based show, so it’s not very popular in America yet, but it should be considering it was awarded an 8.8/10 rating from users on Admittedly, it can be cheesy at times, but the group of strong women more than make up for it as they showcase serious issues faced by women of the time. Plus, it’s full of tough gals and lesbians looking to make a difference, so it’s really win-win.

Orange is the New Black is one of the most obvious LGBTQ-friendly shows on Netflix. The show takes place in a women’s prison, where at least half of the characters on identify as lesbian or bisexual, and many of the show’s storylines follow their relationships in detail. Also, as a blog from Adam & Eve notes, Laverne Cox’s character, Sophie, also makes it a great series for transgender representation. Sophie has to deal with issues of gender dysphoria in addition to the clinical side of maintaining her femininity while behind bars.

Best of all, because it’s a Netflix original series, you can count on it remaining available for streaming‚Äîso binge watching is optional, but not necessary.

The L Word follows a tight-knit group of lesbians battling life and love together. I’m a little embarrassed to say that I haven’t actually watched this show before‚Äîwe never had the fancy cable package required to watch shows on HBO and Showtime when I was growing up. Oddly enough, however, I’ve seen The Real L Word before‚Äîa show that’s been discussed before on the L stop‚Äîbut I’ve never seen the series from which it adapted its name.

But hey, now I’m a grown-ass woman with her very own Netflix password, so there’s nothing to stop me from binging on all 70 episodes over the span of a few weekends.

Another classic LGBTQ program, Queer as Folk is the gay complement to The L Word, following the lives of several gay male characters. There are some lesbian characters, too, but the majority of the show focuses on the men.

It’s surprising that Queer as Folk was considered groundbreaking television when it premiered just 15 years ago. The first episode was even highlighted in Out as showing the first-ever simulated sex scene between two male characters in television history.

Oh how far we’ve come.

Lost Girl is another Canadian television show that’s somehow continued to fly under the radar of American entertainment. It’s an ongoing series that follows Bo, a gorgeous small-town girl who learns that she is not actually human but instead a succubus who feeds off the sexual energy of humans‚ men and women alike.

If you’re looking for a sexy show with intense drama, and you’re a fan of sci-fi, Netflix has four seasons of Lost Girl geared up and ready to go for you binging pleasure.
