Denver March Madness

As March Madness gears up and everyone is scrambling to finish their brackets the women at HipChicksOut  and Babes Around Denver (BAD)  are getting ready to play host to 30,00 fans of women’s basketball. This year Denver has the honor of hosting the tournament and Silke Reuthlinger and Dede Frain won’t let this great experience go without a party (or five).

“We have created an action-packed weekend to celebrate the Women’s Final Four with events that will suit all types of genres. Some dance, some comedy, some charity, and SOME basketball!” added Hip Chicks Out founder Silke Reuthlinger. “We want people to remember SWISH Women’s Slam Dunk Weekend as one of the most memorable Women’s Final Four Celebration Weekends they’ve experienced.”

The SWISH Women’s Slam Dunk Weekend celebrates the 2012 Division I Women’s National Basketball Championship and features five straight days of events, including happy hours and viewing parties, a mega dance party, a live comedy show and a fundraising brunch. For the first time ever in the Mountain Time Zone, women’s basketball fans, coaches, and student-athletes will converge on the Mile High City for a celebration of women, girls, sports and community that is unlike any other for one of the premier collegiate women’s sporting events in the world, the NCAA Women’s Div. I Final Four.

SWISH kicks off Friday, March 30 with a warm-up event, a happy hour welcome Kick-Off Party starting at 5pm at Brooklyn’s Sports Bar, SWISH headquarters across from the Pepsi Center.

The party continues Saturday, March 31 with a Tailgate Happy Hour at Eden from 4-9 as a pre-party primer leading up to Saturday night’s Fast Break Mega Dance Party at Exdo Events Center, featuring DJ Tatiana and SaaS duo spinning country, 70’s, 80’s, retro, Top 40, hip hop and house music.

On Sunday, April 1, Kelly McMurray and Merrill Lynch present Time Out: Equality Brunch at Hotel Monaco, with 100% of proceeds benefiting the National Center for Lesbian Rights and commemorating the 40th Anniversary of Title IX, the landmark legislation that opened the doors for women in sports. The brunch is designed by award-winning Panzano chef Elise Wiggins. “We want to take some time to honor those who have paved the way for women’s sports equality,” says Dede Frain, founder of Babes Around Denver, “And also remind everyone that we the journey is far from over,”

Wolfe Video presents the 3-Point Party Monday, April 2, a triple play evening of happy hour, comedy show featuring national comedian Julie Goldman and dance party following the show all at Exdo Events Center. Goldman is best known for her role in Logo’s Big Gay Sketch Show.

Tuesday’s basketball finals will be ushered in with the Final Tip Off all-day party bash at Brooklyn’s, SWISH headquarters. Over the course of the weekend schedule, events will feature drink specials, viewing parties, giveaways, and drawings for an Olivia trip for two to Vallarta Palace Resort in Mexico and a trip for two to Cozumel Palace Resort with Sweet.

Babes Around Denver (BAD) is the largest women’s social group in the metro Denver area, providing social opportunities for lesbians and the community and supporting important causes since 2003, including First Friday, the biggest and longest running monthly women’s party in the country. More than 4000 women are part of the BAD network. BAD has received coveted “Best of Denver” and “Readers Choice – Best Club Night” awards from Westword as well as OutStanding awards from OutFront Colorado.

HipChicksOut is a social networking group open to all lesbians and their allies, regardless of age, demographic or style. Founded in 2005, HCO has provided Denver’s community and beyond with a great variety of activities and events for women including happy hours, kickball, golf, bike outings, Pride parties, charity events and even a trip to San Diego. HCO continues to create fun environments to connect people.

If you are lucky enough to head to Denver this is what you have available to keep you entertained besides the number of events happening at Tourney Town. I have heard rumblings of Sheryl Swoops being in town and signing autographs and the faint whispers of a Jewel concert. No matter what you do, if you are going to Denver you are once lucky lady. Go find Silke and Dede, say hi and tell them you flew all the way in from Chicago and the L Stop sent you. They are waiting to introduce you around, Chicago!

Meghan played two sports in college and spent her post college years playing women’s pro football, capturing a national title, before having to quit due to injury. She still plays numerous sports in rec leagues around the city and boasts at a recent team tryout knocked out 51 consecutive push-ups in a minute.
