Our Favorite Celesbian Moms

LynchMomThe lilacs are blossoming and magnolias blooming, giving way to appreciation of the cycle of life and the beauty of nature. It’s not surprising that this season of rebirth is when we celebrate the most glorious women in the world…Mothers. Whether our own or other’s, we should take a moment to appreciate the hard work that goes into raising the next generation of athletes, literary greats, and future movers and shakers. Amongst all the controversy of marriage equality and LGBTQ families, we wanted to highlight just a few of the “celesbian” moms who inspire us! We are just normal families like the rest; complete with screaming kids and delightful giggles, terrible twos and tweens alike.

Jillian Michaels & Heidi Rhoades

momJillianKids: Lukensia, Phoenix—Fun Facts: Jillian is well known as the fitness guru and trainer from the t.v. show “The Biggest Loser,” but her partner Heidi is also a fitness buff and works as a yoga instructor. Jillian has famously told people (pre-parenthood) that they can always make time to workout but after becoming a mom, she has since softened and admitted that balancing time is more difficult that she thought. In a 2013 interview she stated, “Wait, how am I supposed to do all this? Son of a bitch, this is hard!”

Cynthia Nixon and Christine Marinoni

momCynthiaKids: Max Ellington, Samantha, and Charles—Fun Fact: Cynthia is most well known for her role in the smash series “Sex in the City.” When she met Christine (an education activist) in 2004 (post divorce from ex-husband Danny in 2003) sparks flew and she never looked back. When asked about it, Cynthia simply stated “…I’m just a woman in love with another woman.”

Jodie Foster

MomJodyKids: Charles and Christopher (Kit)—Fun Fact: Jodie’s two children took center spotlight during her 2013 Golden Globes speech, where she teasingly “came out” as a single mother in response to the ‘controversy’ surrounding her sexuality. She shares parenting with her ex-partner, Cydney Bernard, a notable Hollywood producer.

Melissa Etheridge

momMelissaKids: Bailey Jean, Beckett, (With Julie Cypher) Johnnie Rose, Miller Steven (with Tammy Lynn Michaels)—Fun Fact: Despite being a groundbreaking musician, LGBTQ and cancer advocate, Melissa is most proud of her role as “mom.” She raises her kids with the mantra of “fearless love” and said the most surprising thing about parenting, for her, is how much it calls to an inner part of her that she didn’t know she had. Advice for other parents? Easy—“Don’t worry, it’s a long ride…it’ll work out. You are enough.”

Wanda & Alex Sykes

MomWandaKids: Twins, Olivia Lou and Lucas Claude—Fun Fact: The funny lady’s wife, Alex, is French and their kids are being raised bi-lingual. Occasionally, this leads to trouble as the kids will start spouting off in French in public, leaving Sykes to figure out the meaning and attempt to explain to others what the translation really meant…as she told Ellen, “foch” is French for “seal” and totally appropriate to say at the aquarium.

Jane Lynch & Dr. Lara Embry

MomJaneKids: Chase and Haden—Fun Fact: Jane, a Chicago native and hilarious actor, married her long-term partner Lara (a psychologist) in 2010. While less known in public circles, Lara made legal headlines when she won a bitter custody battle with an ex-partner and was awarded the “same parental rights as any adoptive parent;” this was big news in the LGBTQ community, and she was awarded the NCLR’s Justice Award in 2009. Jane has become a dedicated and positively Glee-ful step-parent to the girls.

Sara Gilbert

MomSaraKids: Sawyer and Levi Hank Gilbert-Perry-Fun Fact: The former “Roseanne” star just recently got engaged to current partner, Linda Perry (of 4 Non Blondes fame). While her kids are from a previous relationship with Allison Adler, Linda has jumped on board the parenting train and the two are nothing but excited to continue on this journey together.

Kelly Cassidy & Kelley Quinn

MomKellyKids: 3 sons—Fun Fact: It was the engagement heard around Illinois. This past January, just outside the Capitol building and right before our marriage equality bill was introduced, Kelley (a Director of Communications for Cook County) proposed to Rep. Kelly Cassidy. It had a momentous effect on all of us in the LGBTQ community, cementing a visual of our struggle for marriage rights and a celebration of love…publically, unequivocally, these two women took a stand when Kelley took a knee.

Cori & Kacy Boccumini

MomLwordKids: Charlie & #2!—Fun Fact: This adorable couple who stole our hearts on the controversial t.v. series, “The Real L Word”, are expecting their second child in July! Like the show or hate it, you couldn’t help but be affected by the struggle that these two went through with the loss of their first child, Charlie. The strength and love that came through it, and the determination to go through the whole process again, made cheerleaders of us all.

About Leah Schein

Leah is a born and bred Chicagoan, and considers herself extremely fortunate to be raised by amazing liberal parents in Logan Square. Coming from a long family history of equality activism, the crazy world of politics feels like home to her. Her upbringing allowed her to fully appreciate her love of tacos, and provided the support needed to be independent and insane. She is a happy survivor of the public school system, all the way through her undergrad years, culminating with a BA in anthropology. Her love of travel and all things adventurous led to the pursuit of a Master of Science from sunny ol’ England, where she happily grasped a conservation degree and ran off to live in a number of rain forests to research nocturnal primates. Through the amazing diversity she was fortunate to be raised amongst, she has an unwavering appreciation of all cultures and peoples, and has used this to form the foundation of her outspoken support of civil rights. You may have seen her running around Boystown/Tuna town over the last decade, or at events she volunteers at for the Human Rights Campaign. It’s possible you spied her at the Silent Film Festival. That strange woman getting into a wrestling match in the leaves on Foster Ave beach at 3am…that definitely wasn’t her. She couldn’t be more excited about sharing her love of science, and it’s role in our daily lives, with the community she loves. Nerds are cool, people. They drink martini’s too.
