Democracy Burlesque: Where only the politics are naked

Democracy Burlesque Want to laugh ’til you cry? Want to pass equal marriage laws? Want to do something productive for the election while you sit and drink and giggle? Then Democracy Burlesque is where you should be. Chicago is home to the world of improv and sketch comedy, as many of you know. We don’t mince words, we don’t let injustice slide. As the only political sketch comedy show in town, Democracy Burlesque has built a reputation for their wit and side-splitting humour.

What’s more important during this election season is that DB has taken a very serious role in supporting local charities and doing what they can to help reelect our current president…one who supports equal pay for equal work, equal marriage laws, and anti-discrimination laws in the workplace. It’s getting close to the wire. As such, I know a lot of you are wishing you could do more to show your support but just don’t have the time or money to do so right now. Never fear! DB has you covered. You can have a guilt-free night out every Tuesday at Mary’s Attic (5400 N. Clark) and just by saying “HRC” at the door, $4 of your ticket price gets directly donated to the largest civil rights organization in the country. The current show is a mash up of all of DB’s greatest hits and guaranteed to entertain.

THIS Tuesday, DB has gone one step farther. All of their profits are being donated directly to HRC. Every ticket, every person. HRC is a driving political force behind President Obama, fully endorsing him over Gov. Romney, and is working overtime to make sure we don’t elect a President that will allow this country to slide back into the dark ages of sexism and gender discrimination. With a little over a month left until election time, we’re in serious crunch mode. So come, take a weekday breather, and enjoy yourself. We’ve been fighting, and working, and pushing, for years. You deserve some relaxation time. You deserve equal protection under the law. You deserve a drink that has the delightful aftertaste of “social justice.”

About Leah Schein

Leah is a born and bred Chicagoan, and considers herself extremely fortunate to be raised by amazing liberal parents in Logan Square. Coming from a long family history of equality activism, the crazy world of politics feels like home to her. Her upbringing allowed her to fully appreciate her love of tacos, and provided the support needed to be independent and insane. She is a happy survivor of the public school system, all the way through her undergrad years, culminating with a BA in anthropology. Her love of travel and all things adventurous led to the pursuit of a Master of Science from sunny ol’ England, where she happily grasped a conservation degree and ran off to live in a number of rain forests to research nocturnal primates. Through the amazing diversity she was fortunate to be raised amongst, she has an unwavering appreciation of all cultures and peoples, and has used this to form the foundation of her outspoken support of civil rights. You may have seen her running around Boystown/Tuna town over the last decade, or at events she volunteers at for the Human Rights Campaign. It’s possible you spied her at the Silent Film Festival. That strange woman getting into a wrestling match in the leaves on Foster Ave beach at 3am…that definitely wasn’t her. She couldn’t be more excited about sharing her love of science, and it’s role in our daily lives, with the community she loves. Nerds are cool, people. They drink martini’s too.
