Forget the socially conscious documentaries like Born into Brothels; I’ve been sitting on that Netflix movie for weeks now. At the end of a long day at work all I really want to do is laugh, and no one makes me laugh like Wanda Sykes. Sometimes while I’m snorting, I even manage to learn something by questioning funding practices.
“Like the Space Program. Ok fine, we can have a space program, but why billions and billions of dollars in the Space Program? What have we learned from our space travels? I mean really, what has NASA given us other than a fu@%ing mattress that you can jump up and down on and not spill your wine? What the F*%k!? Can you give me more than a mattress? To me the space program is nothing but a big ass Welfare program for really smart people. It’s like these people are sooo smart they’re useless. It’s like we just have to give them busy-work, just keep them busy. Look up, fuck it just look up. What a bunch of useless information… Hmm really, there probably was life on Mars and then they probably starved to death because they spent their money on a space program.”
This is what makes Wanda the comedic genius that she is; because we tend to forget that while laughing, the comedy itself is cathartic and educational. We laugh because we can’t even scream at the ridiculousness of our current reality. Whether it’s politics, race, or sexuality Wanda is on top of pointing out some of our silly preconceived notions, (i.e. watch Wanda’s fabulous insight on being gay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_wWJ-_4uSY&feature=related) Winning more Emmy’s than I care to count, she is an accomplished writer, actor, comic, and dare I say social activist. Can you imagine if the political debates were hosted by Wanda Sykes? I would definitely figure out my HD convertor box to watch that show.
So at the end of the day I don’t want the NEWS. I don’t need more of that circus and the Republicans or the Republicans’ Democrats. I just want Wanda. Though I know the politics of our time is so very serious, I just want to laugh. I’m sick of pulling my hair out and screaming at my day-late streaming of the Daily Show. That’s why I’m heading to the Chicago Theatre on September 29, 2012, to laugh my ass off.
