You Came to See a Rock Show

PeachesIf you’re in the mood for a genderfucking good time, Peaches Does Herself will be debuting this Friday at The Logan Theatre. Expect fiery nipples, porn stars, 65 year-old strippers and exploding penises over themes of love and transsexuality in this semi-autobiographical film of a stage production of the same name. After all, this is brought to you by the subversive and shocking electro-pop performer Peaches, and to call Peaches sexually progressive is an understatement and almost insulting.

Aside from the film being an Official Selection at this year’s Sundance London, what it most importantly showcases is the music: it is a retrospective trip through her greatest hits, from “Lovertits” to “Fuck the Pain Away.” The L Stop caught up with Peaches about the film from her new home base in Germany.

Angelique: I’ve always loved that you got your stage name from Nina Simone’s song, “Four Women.” What about that particular song resonated with you?

Peaches: Well it’s actually the ending of the song when Nina reveals the name of the fourth woman by passionately screaming, “My name is Peaches!” I wanted her to be singing that emotionally to me, so I changed my name to Peaches.

A: You’ve called Peaches Does Herself a “jukebox musical that got a sex change.” Tell us how your love of theater inspired it.

P: Well, there is a lot of bad theater out there. Most “cool” musicians hate musicals and I want Peaches Does Herself to be one of the exceptions to the rule. A Rocky Horror Picture Show for a new generation.

Peaches2A: What should fans, like myself, who have seen your live shows expect from the film?

P: Everything they think they should expect from me…and more…

A: How was it being back in your hometown at the world premiere of Peaches Does Herself at The Toronto International Film Festival?

P: It was a trip! Especially because I used to sneak into this festival when I was younger.

A: So, why the move to Berlin?

P: I’ve lived here for 13 years. I don’t even remember why.

A: You made a song and a video for the Russian feminist punk rock collective Pussy Riot when members got arrested and accused of “hooliganism.” What made you want to get involved?

P: I was a fan of their work before they got arrested and I thought, if I lived in Russia, I would be one of them; so, I related and felt the need to get involved.

A: What’s next for you?

P: Continuing this film festival adventure with Peaches Does Herself, a few independent movie collaborations and writing…I hope to get new music out there soon. I’m also doing a few special performances for Yoko Ono’s Meltdown Festival in London in June.
