Queer Must See Theatre

Iman Crutcher, Artistic Director with Earth Pearl Collective took some time to talk to The L Stop to discuss the production of “A Streetcar Named Desire” playing at the Anthenaeum Theatre. For a theatre experience both inspiring and unique – be sure to take some time to see this show.

Earth Pearl Collective is a group of young, queer, black womyn dedicated to creating performances and mixed media art events that enhance and promote the visibility and success of queer black womyn. We believe that positivity is key, no matter how cliché it sounds. Promoting agency and the confidence to express one’s wants are vital to EPC’s mission. We collectively discuss issues surrounding our marginalized communities and creatively address them.

Having an all-female cast has opened up all of our minds to how, even as queer identified, we are extremely hetero normative in our thinking. Constantly reminding us to use ‘she’ pronouns where it feels natural to say ‘he’ was liberating as well. Rashida Khanbey as Stanley changes everything you thought you knew about the classic play. The ensemble backgrounds range from New York-trained classic theatre to trained psychologist. We were honored to have ladies join us in our efforts to integrate communities and raise awareness of same sex intimate partner violence.

After “Streetcar…” Earth Pearl Collective will resume our monthly variety show at Hamburger Mary’s in Andersonville called “Accept Variety” with hot summer themes and all new acts. Following that we have a vendors fair featuring all queer womyn of color, exciting group trips around the city through our Earth Pearl Collective “Meet-up,” and hopefully many more collaborations with entertainment and activist groups around the city. You can stay up to date on our events by liking our Facebook page, following us on twitter and signing up for our email blast.

About K. Guzman

Kathy grew up all over the US - lots of east coast time. She is a surfer girl with an unabridged curiosity. A woman whose mid life awakening continues to bring her to the place she was meant to be. Her degree in Journalism/Creative Writing from the University of Central Florida is being yanked from the archives and put to good use. Her two kids are grown and rock stars in this wild world – her Harley is ready for some serious summer miles – and her heart remains open to life, women and the possibilities each day brings.
