As the holiday season rolls full steam ahead and every moment of every week fills with meetings, family parties, work parties, friend’s parties , get togethers, pub crawls and God only knows what else – we may want to stop in our snowy tracks, walk away from the Frango mints, and remember what this season actually means to each of us. What it is that makes this marathon between Turkey Day and Mistletoe special in our eyes. What makes the magic of the season “the magic of the season”?
The magic may come from a tie to faith, or a religious practice that reminds us of our humility and universal connection with something greater than ourselves that somehow puts this crazy life into perspective. It might be the seasonal music that haunts and follows us in the most unexpected places as we wander through our daily routines and usually, if it doesn’t make us crazy, lifts our spirits just a bit. There may be memories of tradition and strong family bonds that continue to make this time of year simply more festive than other times of the year. There may be smiles and faces that we warmly remember – that made the season so special for each of us – and it is when we experience those memories that the magic somehow finds its way back to us. Our kitchens become more alive and the little baker in our soul comes out to toss the flour around and create those yummy treats that we only treat ourselves to during the holidays. There may be the excitement and anticipation of the turning of time into another new year; into the chance for renewal and promises refreshed so that tomorrow will be what we dream for tomorrow to be.
From the time we were little and anticipated asking Santa for all those things we just had to have – the magic took hold of our hearts and filled them with the hope of receiving all that we had asked for. And as we grow older – I think the magic also comes in the spirit of giving – giving to one another without the expectation of receiving anything in return. The feeling we get when the face in front of us gleams with gratitude and the joy of that moment suddenly takes residence in our hearts and minds. That magic is what sends each of us into the childlike state as we open up the mystery in front of us in anticipation of what might be inside the perfectly wrapped gift – the magic of the unknown and knowing it will not be a secret for very much longer….
Maybe the magic feeling comes because we take more time to recognize each other in this busy world. We gather, we celebrate, and we laugh, cheer and raise a glass to good health and happiness. We catch up with new friends and reconnect with old ones all in the tide of wishing the happiest of times to one another and acknowledging the things that brought us together in the first place. Maybe the magic comes from an unspoken hope instilled in each of us – a hope that since childhood, whispers to us that anything is possible if we only believe.
Tis the season my friends – find reason to find joy and celebrate. Celebrate our friends and our families, our health and our hopes. Find the magic where ever you can and hold on to it for as long as you can. Happy Holidays!!
